Who Moved My Cheese?

Spencer Johnson's Who Moved My Cheese? is a short business fable that uses two mice, Sniff and Scurry, and two miniature humans, Hem and Haw, to explore how people respond to change. The four characters live in a maze and spend their days searching for cheese, which serves as a metaphor for whatever people want in life, such as a job, relationship, money, or health. When they discover a large supply of cheese at Cheese Station C, they settle into a comfortable routine, believing it will last forever. One day the cheese disappears. The book's best-known framework centers on "moving with the cheese," a phrase meaning to adapt to new circumstances rather than cling to the old. It also contrasts the mice's simple approach with the humans' overthinking, showing how fear and entitlement can delay action. Johnson wrote the book as a parable rather than a research study, though it grew out of his earlier story about change and was popularized in workplaces facing restructuring.
