Josef Albers’s *Interaction of Color*, first published in 1963, is a foundational text on color theory rooted in his teaching at Black Mountain College and Yale University. Rather than treating color as a fixed property, Albers argues that color is relational: hues shift in perception depending on their neighbors, proportions, and context, making color experience subjective and deceptive. The book is organized around a series of studies rather than traditional chapters. Its central framework is “learning by doing,” with readers performing paper exercises using colored sheets to test how one color can appear as two, or two colors as one. Key demonstrations include studies of color relativity, the Weber–Fechner law as applied to color, the distinction between factual and actual color, and the phenomenon of simultaneous contrast, where adjacent colors influence each other. Albers emphasizes “color intervals” and “color boundaries,” showing that quantity, placement, and afterimage affect perception. A famous exercise asks students to make one color look like two by placing it on different grounds, and the reverse—making two different colors appear identical. The 1963 edition included silk-screened plates, but later editions expanded to include many more color plates and a complete text, preserving Albers’s experimental method. The book’s argument is not a set of rules but a training in seeing: color is the most relative medium in art, and its effects cannot be taught by verbal formulas. It remains widely used in art and design education, influencing how color is studied as an interactive, context-dependent phenomenon rather than a fixed palette.
