She follows strict rules: she may not rely on her real-world credentials or savings, must find housing and work using only what her wages provide, and must not fall back on skills from her professional life. Ehrenreich organizes the book around a central "wage-structure" argument: that entry-level pay has been deliberately set below the actual cost of living, shifting hidden subsidies onto workers themselves. She examines the physical toll of repetitive labor, the scarcity of affordable housing, the constant threat of homelessness, and the way employers demand "attitude" and deference while offering no security. Her three-month stints reveal how a single missed shift, illness, or car repair can collapse an entire budget. The book's distinctive contribution is its use of participant observation to test meritocratic claims. Rather than abstract poverty statistics, Ehrenreich dramatizes the daily math of rent, groceries, transportation, and uniforms.
