Pedagogy of the Oppressed

Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed, first published in Portuguese in 1968 and in English in 1970, is a foundational text in critical pedagogy. Writing from his experience teaching literacy to impoverished adults in Brazil and later in exile in Chile, Freire argues that traditional education is a “banking” model: teachers deposit information into passive students, reinforcing oppression by treating learners as empty containers. In contrast, he proposes problem-posing education, where teacher and student become co-investigators of reality. The book’s central framework is conscientização, or critical consciousness: the process by which oppressed people learn to perceive social, political, and economic contradictions and act against them. Freire rejects the idea that liberation can be given from above; it must be co-created through dialogue. He develops this in Chapter 3, where he describes “generative themes” drawn from learners’ daily lives, and “codifications”—images or words that spark discussion and reflection. Chapter 1 contrasts humanization and dehumanization, arguing that oppression dehumanizes both oppressor and oppressed. Chapter 2 critiques the banking method in detail, while Chapter 4 examines antidialogical versus dialogical action, including concepts like cultural invasion, manipulation, and synthesis. Though not a classroom manual, the book draws on Freire’s literacy campaigns, where peasants learned to read words like “favela” and “vote” while debating their conditions. Its protagonists are not named individuals but the oppressed themselves, whose historical task is liberation. Pedagogy of the Oppressed has influenced education, theology, and social movements worldwide, though critics note its dense, gendered language and abstract style. It remains a key text for those studying education as a practice of freedom rather than domination.
