Steal Like an Artist

Austin Kleon’s "Steal Like an Artist" is a short, illustrated guide drawn from a commencement address he gave at Broome Community College, where he studied before transferring to Ohio State. Kleon, a writer and artist known for his blackout poems, argues that nothing is wholly original and that creative work comes from collecting, remixing, and building on the ideas of others, a lineage he traces from artists to filmmakers. The book unfolds as ten compact chapters, each a piece of advice paired with his own line drawings and hand-lettered diagrams. Among its distinctive frameworks: start by choosing a few thinkers or makers you genuinely love, then study their influences rather than merely copying them, effectively climbing your own “family tree” of influence. Kleon advises keeping a “swipe file” to log ideas worth returning to, and recommends writing the book or making the work you wish already existed. He separates the “brain” (analog, messy, generative) from the “body” (digital, edited, finished), urging readers to keep side projects and hobbies that feed curiosity. Other chapters cover the value of obscurity and constraints, the importance of being boring and kind, and the idea that “creativity is subtraction.” He closes by urging readers to stop waiting to be discovered and instead make daily work, share it, and let the process teach them. The book grew out of a widely shared blog post and became a New York Times bestseller, later followed by companion volumes "Show Your Work!" and "Keep Going."
