The Case Against Education

In The Case Against Education, economist Bryan Caplan argues that the American education system is a vast, expensive credentialing machine rather than a genuine engine of learning. His central framework distinguishes between the "human capital" model, which claims schooling raises productivity, and the "signaling" model, which holds that diplomas mainly tell employers that a worker is smart, conscientious, and conformist. Caplan sides overwhelmingly with signaling, estimating that only a small fraction of what students learn in high school and college is actually used on the job. He identifies three traits schools certify: intelligence, work ethic, and obedience to authority. The book is organized into three broad sections: the first presents the signaling evidence, the second examines why students forget most of what they study, and the third proposes radical policy conclusions. Caplan argues that education suffers from the "forgetting curve," meaning years of algebra, foreign language, and history are largely lost by adulthood. He also explores the "sheepskin effect," where the diploma itself, not the skills acquired, drives earnings premiums. He contends that colleges deliberately cultivate an "ivory tower" culture that has little economic value. Caplan's policy proposals are intentionally provocative. He calls for deep cuts to public education spending, arguing that vocational training and apprenticeships would serve most students better. He also suggests that employers should be allowed to administer their own aptitude tests, breaking the credential monopoly. While critics note his estimates are speculative, the book remains a widely cited challenge to the assumption that more schooling equals more learning.
