The Lean UX Book

The Lean UX Book by Jeff Gothelf (co-authored with Josh Seiden) argues that teams should stop producing heavyweight design deliverables and instead build, test, and learn in rapid cycles. Originally published in 2013 as Lean UX and later retitled The Lean UX Book, it adapts Eric Ries's Lean Startup thinking and the Design Thinking tradition to product design practice. Its central claim is that documents such as detailed wireframes and specs are hypotheses, not answers, and that the only meaningful measure of progress is validated learning from real users. Gothelf and Seiden also emphasize outcome over output: teams should be measured by behavior change and business results, not by features shipped. They borrow from agile and lean manufacturing, advocating small batch sizes, continuous discovery, and permission to fail cheaply. The book includes chapters on building a Lean UX team, managing stakeholders, and integrating design into agile sprints. Its style is practical, with case examples drawn from agencies and startups. Widely used in product and UX curricula, it remains a foundational text for teams adopting hypothesis-driven, collaborative design.
