The Story of Art

First published in 1950, E.H. Gombrich's "The Story of Art" remains one of the most widely read introductions to art ever written. Gombrich, an Austrian-born art historian who spent much of his career in London, wrote the book for a general audience, and it has sold millions of copies across many editions and languages. The book's organizing framework is famously simple: there is no such thing as Art with a capital A, only artists. Gombrich traces a continuous narrative from the cave paintings of Lascaux and Altamira through Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque, and on into modern movements such as Impressionism, Cubism, and Expressionism. He argues that art history is not a story of steady technical progress toward realism, but of shifting purposes—magic, ritual, religious instruction, decoration, and self-expression—each solved differently by artists working within their own traditions. A recurring idea is the "beholder's share," the notion that viewers complete a work through their own perception and imagination, a concept Gombrich also developed in his earlier book Art and Illusion. Throughout, he emphasizes that styles change because artists pose new problems for themselves rather than simply improving on their predecessors. The book is structured chronologically, with chapters typically centered on periods, regions, or individual figures like Giotto, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh. Gombrich revised it repeatedly over decades, and a sixteenth edition appeared posthumously with a preface by his granddaughter, Leonie Gombrich, addressing art after the 1960s. Its accessible prose and clear narrative have made it a standard first text for students and curious readers alike.
