Edward Tufte’s The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, first self-published in 1983, is a foundational text on statistical graphics and information design. Tufte, a statistician and political scientist, argues that graphics should reveal data rather than decorate it, and the book builds its case through close readings of historical charts, maps, and diagrams alongside sharply criticized modern examples. Its best-known contribution is the data-ink ratio: the proportion of a graphic’s ink devoted to actual data, which Tufte urges designers to maximize by erasing non-data ink and redundant data ink. Related principles include the data-ink ratio’s companion, “erase non-data-ink,” and the concept of chartjunk—visual clutter such as moiré patterns, grids, and decorative hatching that obscures meaning. He also introduces the lie factor, a ratio comparing the size of an effect shown in a graphic with the size of the effect in the data, used to expose distortions in charts that exaggerate or understate changes. The book examines small multiples, sequences of similar small graphics that allow comparison across many conditions, and sparklines-like dense displays, though the term sparkline appeared in his later work. Tufte praises historical achievements such as Charles Joseph Minard’s 1869 map of Napoleon’s Russian campaign, John Snow’s 1854 cholera map, and early statistical atlases, treating them as models of clarity and integrity. He also offers principles of graphical excellence: show the data, induce the viewer to think about substance rather than methodology, avoid distorting what the data say, encourage comparison, and serve a clear purpose. The result is less a how-to manual than an argument, illustrated across more than 200 pages, that good graphics are a moral as well as an aesthetic matter.
