David Hume’s An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, first published in 1748, recasts the philosophical project of his earlier Treatise of Human Nature into a leaner, more accessible set of arguments. Hume divides all mental contents into impressions—vivid sensations and feelings—and ideas, which are faint copies of impressions. From this distinction he derives his copy principle and his fork: relations of ideas (mathematics, logic) are certain but say nothing about existence, while matters of fact rest only on experience and are never demonstrably certain. The Enquiry’s central target is causation. Hume argues that we never perceive a necessary connection between events, only constant conjunction—one billiard ball striking another, followed by motion. Custom or habit leads the mind to expect the second event after the first, and this expectation, not reason, grounds our inferences about the future. He illustrates the point with the missing shade of blue and with the famous billiard-ball example. On this basis he poses his skeptical challenge to induction: no non-circular justification exists for assuming the future will resemble the past. Subsequent sections examine liberty and necessity, arguing that human actions are as regular and predictable as natural events, and that this compatibility preserves both moral responsibility and practical freedom. Hume then turns to miracles, claiming that testimony for a miracle must outweigh the uniform testimony of nature, which never occurs. The final chapter, Of the Academical or Sceptical Philosophy, distinguishes moderate skepticism, useful for curbing dogmatism, from Pyrrhonian doubt, which collapses under ordinary action. Nature, Hume concludes, cures us of excessive skepticism by forcing us to act, believe, and reason despite our inability to justify those habits.
