Critique of Pure Reason

Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason (1781; revised 1787) is a foundational work of modern philosophy that investigates the limits and structure of human cognition. Kant argues that while all knowledge begins with experience, it does not all arise from experience: the mind actively contributes formal conditions that make objective knowledge possible. His central project is a “critique” in the sense of a tribunal, determining what reason can legitimately claim beyond the bounds of possible experience. The book is organized around several distinctive frameworks. The “transcendental aesthetic” treats space and time as pure forms of intuition, not empirical concepts. The “transcendental analytic” develops the categories—twelve pure concepts of the understanding, such as causality and substance—and argues that they are valid only when applied to given intuitions. This yields Kant’s famous distinction between analytic judgments (predicate contained in subject) and synthetic judgments (predicate adds to subject), and his central question: how are synthetic a priori judgments possible? His answer grounds mathematics and physics in the mind’s structuring activity. The “transcendental dialectic” criticizes traditional metaphysics. Kant examines the paralogisms of rational psychology, the antinomies of cosmology (e.g., whether the world has a beginning), and the ideal of pure reason. He concludes that attempts to prove the existence of God or the immortality of the soul overstep possible experience, producing illusion rather than knowledge. Yet he also denies that these ideas are meaningless: they regulate inquiry and support morality. The book’s enduring legacy is its Copernican revolution in philosophy—objects conform to our cognition rather than the reverse—and its rigorous mapping of reason’s powers and limits.
