Michael J. Sandel’s "Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do?" is a widely taught introduction to moral and political philosophy, developed from his popular Harvard course. Rather than defending a single doctrine, Sandel organizes the book around competing theories of justice and tests them against hard moral dilemmas. Early chapters examine utilitarianism through Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill, using examples such as the queen versus the drowning child and the case of the cannibalistic shipwreck survivors to probe whether welfare maximization can justify sacrificing individuals. He then turns to libertarianism, drawing on Robert Nozick and Milton Friedman, and asks whether markets should be allowed to trade votes, organs, or military service. A central section explores Immanuel Kant’s deontology and the idea that persons must be treated as ends in themselves, followed by John Rawls’s veil of ignorance and difference principle, which ask what rules we would choose if we did not know our own place in society. Sandel also considers Aristotle’s view that justice requires cultivating virtue and recognizing the proper purpose of social roles, and he connects these debates to affirmative action, same-sex marriage, and patriotism. His own position, communitarian in spirit, argues that justice cannot be neutral about the good life; it must engage with the moral traditions and shared meanings of particular communities. The book is less a manifesto than a guided confrontation with our own intuitions.
