The Discourses of Epictetus is a record of the teachings of the Stoic philosopher Epictetus, compiled by his student Arrian in the early second century CE. Epictetus himself wrote nothing; the Discourses preserve his spoken lectures, delivered at his school in Nicopolis, Greece, after he had been freed from slavery in Rome. Arrian arranged the material into eight books, of which four survive, and later distilled its core into the shorter Enchiridion, or Handbook. The work's central framework is the Stoic doctrine of the "dichotomy of control": some things are "up to us" (our judgments, impulses, desires, and aversions) and others are not (the body, reputation, property, and outcomes). Epictetus argues that distress arises when people attach themselves to what they cannot govern, and that freedom consists in adjusting desire to fit what is within one's power. Related themes include the discipline of assent, in which the mind refuses to accept hasty impressions as true, and the idea that every external circumstance is merely a "preferred" or "dispreferred" indifferent rather than a genuine good or evil. The Discourses unfold as conversations rather than a systematic treatise. Epictetus addresses unnamed students and critics, and recurring figures include Socrates, Diogenes the Cynic, and the Stoic philosophers Zeno and Chrysippus, used as models of conduct. He criticizes the tendency of students to master syllogisms while failing to live philosophically, and he repeatedly demands that learners actually practice their principles, calling philosophy a matter of daily training in character rather than verbal display. The text also treats providence, the role of the Cynic as a moral scout, friendship, fear of death, and the proper attitude toward exile and hardship. Its tone is direct, sometimes mocking and paternal, reflecting the oral teaching from which it came.
