In The Consolations of Philosophy, Alain de Botton pairs six everyday emotional troubles with a philosopher who addressed something similar, devoting a chapter to each. The first section, on unpopularity, draws on Socrates, who was tried and executed yet argued that we should judge our worth by reason rather than by the verdict of the crowd. The second treats inadequate money through Epicurus, who taught that pleasure means modest, lasting satisfactions—friendship, thought, and freedom from fear—rather than luxury, and estimated what a person actually needs. Frustration finds Seneca, the Stoic adviser to Nero, who argued that anger is a kind of temporary madness and offered techniques for enduring setbacks. Inadequacy is met through Montaigne, whose Essays mock the pretension of philosophers and admit his own flaws, small stature, and bodily embarrassments, suggesting that self-acceptance grows from studying our ordinary, inconsistent selves. A broken heart calls on Schopenhauer, the pessimist who held that love is a blind biological force and that willed suffering is normal; he finds consolation in art and in lowering expectations. Finally, difficulties are addressed by Nietzsche, who rejected mere endurance and argued that hardship can be useful, provided we have a purpose grand enough to justify it. Across the book de Botton uses biography, aphorism, anecdote, and his own illustrations to make abstract arguments concrete, presenting philosophy as a practical resource for ordinary distress rather than a technical discipline. He treats each thinker as a therapist of sorts, extracting usable ideas from their lives and doctrines while acknowledging their quirks and failures.
