Simone de Beauvoir’s *The Ethics of Ambiguity* (1947) is a foundational existentialist text that confronts a central problem: if existence precedes essence and there is no God, how can any action be judged ethically? Beauvoir answers that the human condition is inherently ambiguous—we are both free subjects and objects acted upon by circumstances—and that ethics must arise from this tension rather than escape it. The book’s first chapter, “Ambiguity and Freedom,” rejects both the nihilism of the absurd and the false comfort of absolute values. Beauvoir then develops her distinctive framework through a series of “attitudes” toward freedom, which function as ethical archetypes rather than literal characters. The sub-man flees responsibility by treating existence as meaningless; the serious man surrenders freedom to a cause or authority; the nihilist, disappointed by failed absolutes, turns destructive; the adventurer enjoys freedom without willing it for others; the passionate man fixes on a single object. Each attitude is criticized for treating freedom as either a thing or a private possession. The positive ethic appears in “The Positive Aspect of Ambiguity,” where Beauvoir argues that true freedom is inseparable from others’ freedom. One must will freedom for all, not just oneself, and this willing requires concrete engagement in political and social projects. She explores the moral difficulties of action under oppression, including the problem of means and ends, and the risks of both quietism and violent revolution. The book ends by affirming that ambiguity is not a flaw to overcome but the very ground of ethical life: we must act without guarantees, assuming responsibility for our choices in an uncertain world.
