Ludwig Wittgenstein’s *Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus*, first published in German in 1921 and in English in 1922, is a dense, numbered treatise that seeks to define the limits of language and, by extension, of thought and reality. Its structure is distinctive: seven primary propositions, each followed by decimal-numbered elaborations, moving from the nature of the world to the nature of the subject and finally to silence. The opening claim—that the world is the totality of facts, not of things—anchors the book’s picture theory of meaning, in which a proposition is meaningful only if it depicts a possible state of affairs in logical space. Complex propositions are truth-functions of elementary ones, and logic itself is not a body of doctrines but the scaffolding of the world, shown rather than said. Wittgenstein argues that language can represent reality only because both share a logical form, yet that form cannot itself be stated in language. This yields his famous distinction between what can be said and what can only be shown. Ethics, aesthetics, religion, and the meaning of life lie beyond the bounds of sense; attempts to speak of them produce nonsense, though the impulse toward them is deeply human. The book famously culminates in the proposition that whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent. Its influence spans logical positivism, analytic philosophy, and later Wittgenstein’s own rejection of much of the early system. The *Tractatus* remains a foundational, idiosyncratic work about logic, representation, and the ethical limits of language.
